Nurse's Aide: Provide medical care during those hours in which a Nurse is not present in the building. Complete routine health monitoring (vitals, heights and weights) as ordered by the physicians, provide first aide and basic medical care as needed, and facilitate communication with On-Call psychiatric and pediatric service teams. Accurately disburse, administer, and document all regularly prescribed medications for all students during the weekend and on occasionally scheduled shifts during the week. Because of the serious health risks associated with the medications, this position requires a highly skilled and experienced paraprofessional that not only can work with potent medications at the highest safety standards but also someone who can deal with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances. The person in this role will possess the ability to successfully learn and then successfully carry out a detailed plan that directs how to ensure that each student receives the correct prescribed medications in their time specific pre-packaged individual medication envelops. Additionally they will have to have to learn and then be able to explain each of the medications purposes and side-effects to those children taking them so that the children are only taking medications when duly informed. To ensure all health risks and liability issues are minimized, a key role of this position will be highly accurate and immediate documentation of all medication administrations and all medication errors, no matter of what nature. Because taking medications can cause to the students, the person in the role must be extremely comfortable working with severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, extremely good at quickly establishing trust and rapport, and highly competent in managing potential emotional and behavioral crisis. The Nurse's Aide will also complete tasks that facilitate the efficient and the accuracy of the remaining medical and psychiatric staff. Essential Functions

For additional information click here. 30% Medical Monitoring: Gather and document vitals as ordered by the physician. Gather and document heights and weights as ordered by the physician. Monitor the healing of any injuries (check wounds, splits, casts, etc.) and ensure compliance with follow-up procedures. Provide basic medical care for illness or injuries.

30% Monitoring Medication Administration: Ensure that each time specific, individually pre-packaged medication packet includes the correct medications for each child as indicated on the current Medication Administration Record (MAR). Watch in entirety as student receives medications and ingests them and employ behavioral strategies to ensure full compliance. In all instances in which medication administration is not completed as prescribed, the Coverage person must be notified immediately, and the Psychiatrist "On-Call" must be notified by phone or pager. Identify each medication and correct dose if asked by the student. Inform students of their rights of refusal and resulting procedures if asked by the student. Discard all pre-packaging materials with identifying names and medications of students to ensure privacy and dignity of student.

20% Documentation Medication Administration: Immediately following the witnessed administration of medication, accurately complete the MAR for each student. Once all medications for that time period had been distributed, accurately complete any necessary Unusual Incident Reports (UIR) for missing or inaccurately packaged medications, missed administration of medications, incorrectly administered medications, or refused medications. Complete an electronic list of all completed UIR and distribute it to the supervisory team at the end of each weekend day.

5% Medication Administration Preparation: Help ensure accurate entering of Doctor's Orders into internal recording keeping system. Create pre-packaging medication envelope labels via computer database and affix labels to medication envelopes. Update computer database with current medical information, as directed by the nurse.

10% Milieu Maintenance: While in the milieu, be aware of any unsafe items or materials that students may have accessed and take action to prevent such items from being used in an unsafe manner. Be aware of all residential care staff duties and school rules and act as a resource for the students and fellow staff members. Provide crisis intervention assistance when requested by the Coverage person.

5% Other duties, as assigned.
